Hello all,

Skyrise City was a fabulous success, thanks to all involved. The judges Craig Moller and Hamish Neville picked out several projects for special mention:

Invasion (Henry Feng and Tina Martin) for DRAMA
Lymphian (Muse Tongthamchart, Joo Eun Kim, Xin Ya Zhou, Forrest Chen) for CRAFT (See their blog)
Linearity (Han Byul Seol, Ben Collings, Brett Schwieters, Andrew Porteous) for CRAFT, precision and use of materials. (See image below).

The winner selected by the judges was ANEMOMIX (Sarah Harrison, Raphaela Rose, Grace Wilkinson) - for the engaging nature of the experience that they created. Images of each project will be uploaded soon . .

For a number of reasons we have decided to move the pack out to 9am-12pm on Sunday 17 October.
We will pack out in the reverse order of the pack in , but with shorter time spans. I will send further information on this soon.

1:Arrival times at shed

We have worked out the time bands for arrival at the shed. The plan can be downloaded from the resources part of this cecil page and from here. As we have a narrow one-way entry and limited space on site please plan your project logistics to keep the number of vehicle trips onto the site at a minimum. I will be sending you all a map of how to approach the site as, to keep traffic flowing, we will be making the approach from a side street rather than directly down Halsey St.

Sandbags

You can hire sandbags from Hollywood Props:

Alternately you can buy bags of sand from Placememakers, but I would only do this if you had a need for the afterwards. You might for example on sell them onto a playcenter for their sandpit.

Health and Safety Plan

For Skyrise City we require each team to complete a Health and Safety Plan for their project. This document can be downloaded here (doc) or here (pdf). Please take your time to attend to this document with care and attention. Discuss your plans for the event with your tutor(s). Use extra pages and drawings if this will help you explain how you will transport, install and dismantle your project safely and within all relevant laws and regulations.

You need to hand your plan into the box outside my office (room 333) by 4:00pm on Friday October 1. This will give us the opportunity to review your plans well ahead of the event and address any concerns we might have. The Health and Safety plan also operates as your entry form for Skyrise City, so make sure you give the correct details of your team and that you have your plan in on time.

Something you might want to think about - the tallest height object that you are allowed to drive down any street is 4.25m. For further information about safely towing a load on a trailer see this link.

The height minimum for Skyrise City projects is 8m. The maximum height will be determined by your position in the venue. This will be decided by ballot next week.

OH.NO.SUMO was established in Auckland in early 2009 by James Pearce, Patrick Loo, Katherine O’Shaugnessy and Sarosh Mulla. Some Q+A regarding OPEN entries

This below applies to open entries for SKYRISE City

* Can there be any tolerance to the number of people per group? (you
mentioned 2~3) but I was wondering if matters if there were more.
This group size restriction is only for Design 4 students here at the university, it does not apply to open entries. So, for instance, a practice could put in an entry.

* What would be the appropriate means of conducting this exercise?
through constant email with you? or could we meet in person to
discuss this event in detail?
Keep looking on the website for updates ( http://skyrise-city.blogspot.com/). Meet the entry requirements (eg send in entry form,which will be available next week, the health and safety plan etc when required) then email me with any further questions or queries

* Scheduling wise, has there been any word as to how this project will
be paced along? and would there be any specific dates in which we
could attend to gain information and insight into the project?
Open entries need to be self initiating. So while we have a teaching programme in place for the Design 4 studio entries, with crits etc, we are not running these for open entries. Think of it as any other competition.

* Is there any additional information about the project in general?
- material restrictions? none, although they will have to meet health and safety criteria
-guidlines? Keep looking at the website for these, there will be some refining of the height requirement and closer to the event further guidelines will come out
- safety precautions, and how to go about dealing with this. Each team will be required to supply a health and safety plan for their project. This will be a pro-form document which will be sent to every team who has entered. I will need to be assured from the health and saftey plan that the project can go ahead.

-site conditions: whether we could go visit the site itself? There is no public access to the site. I will put some images of it up on this blog. We are planning a site visit for next Friday 13 August. I will contact you to confirm this.

SKYRISE city needs a very cool poster and you can design it. The winning poster will be professionally printed and distributed to industry Auckland wide.

Requirements:
A1 (portrait or landscape) single sided B&W +1 colour
Document colour: CMYK
Images: 300dpi
Print: to pdf at A3
Save: file as layered PDF, PSD or AI (not flattened, so that our designer can work with it)

Please note:
Fonts must be in vector format (separate layers to images)
Do not use unauthorised images/fonts. Please check for copyrights issue.

Auckland Architecture Weekend 2010 competition

Categories for entry:
This competition has two categories
1: students of Design 4 at the Auckland University School of Architecture
2: limited open entry

All contestants must complete an entry form by Friday 10 September 2010. Entry forms will be available from this website in August.

Competition Brief
Working in groups of no less than 2 and no more than 3 people fabricate a SKYRISE.

Requirements: Your SKYRISE must reach a minimum height of 10m. The SKYRISE must take up no more than 2.5 x 2.5m square floor area. The SKYRISE must be self-supporting, you may not affix to the site in any way. All entrants will be required to prepare a health and safety plan for their project and to follow any instructions given for exhibition safety requirements.

SKYRISE Stage 1: Auckland University Design 4 students only
Tuesday 10th August.
Registration between 9:00-11:00am, jury commences 1:00pm
Level 3 exhibition space.

This part of the competition is for proposals. In this part of the competition you will present your SKYRISE project proposal to a special guest jury, who will short list then select a winning project.

Presentation time limit: each project has 3 minutes to present (including showing any animation or slides). Finalists will re-present their project in a final run off.
Format: digital presentations, A0 poster, models (supply own plinth or stand)
Jury: Eminent persons TBC
Prizes: The winning SKYRISE project will receive a generous prize package to support the further design and fabrication of your project. See website closer to the jury for updates on prizes.

SKYRISE Stage 2: All entries
Saturday 16 October

This part of the competition is for completed SKYRISE projects. In this part of the competition you will construct your project in your allotted position in sheds 1+2, 101 Halsey Street, The Viaduct, Auckland, CBD. Access to the site will be available from 12:00 mid-day. Projects must be completely installed by 5:00pm. The event will be open to the public from 5:00-9:00pm. Project must be removed by 12:00 mid-night.

This event will be advertised as part of Auckland Architecture Weekend and will be open to the public. An eminent judge will select the winning SKYRISE project.

SKYRISE City competition regulations: contestants are required to adhere to the competition regulations. These will be updated regularly on this website.
